GUWAHATI, January 3: Moran Press Club conferred the first Binod Phukan Memorial Jourlist Award on Purbajyoti Chutia at a function at Guwahati Press Club today. Jourlist Kaksen Deka was the chief guest at the function.
Speaking on the occasion, jourlist Hemanta Barman said: “Binod Phukan was a successful jourlist. He had a mission that inspired him for social works. However, jourlism nowadays is governed by the business community. As an immediate effect of globalization, jourlists have become puppets at the hands of corporate houses.”
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Jourlist Kaksen Deka said: “The step taken by Moran Press Club is laudable. All press clubs of the state should do such activities. Earlier news had takers as the reports were authentic. However, the rights of jourlists have been curtailed by politicians and corporate houses to a great extent now.”      The function began with the lighting of the  ceremonial lamp by the widow of Binod Phukan, Bipani Phukan. It was attended, among others, by Purbanchal Tai Ahom Sahitya Sabha president Doyand Borgohain.
