Ordeal for passengers to elongate

FROM OUR STAFF CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, January 5: The misery of the commuters to the youngest district in the state is expected to elongate.  The repair or widening of the crucial forty eight km long dilapidated Weiloi–Mawkyrwat–Rangblang road that connects the district with two other districts as well as the state headquarters  is awaiting departmental procedures– right from the Union Ministry of Planning to the Ministry of DoNER.

Knowing fully well the type of ‘table to table movement’ of the files, there is a doubt about the execution of the project by the third quarter of the next fiscal year, opined a source, while informing that the file pertaining to detailed project report (DPR) of this road is still lying with the Union Ministry of Planning.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh today confirmed that the DPR is under examition by the Union Ministry of Planning. The Deputy Chief Minister also refused to give any tentative time frame for the project to kick off, even as he said that the approved files will have to be channelized through the Ministry of DoNER.

In fact, an amount of Rs 27 crore was sanctioned in 2006–2007 to construct and widen this critical road to South West Khasi Hills district before the Ministry of DoNER due to inordite delay in execution of the project. The decision to recall the project has drawn the ire of the social organizations who had even called a couple of agitation programmes in the last part of 2014.
