A Black Day

A Black Day

Dr Jyots Bhattacharjee

It was one of the blackest days in the country. On the March, 28, 2018, the news came that there was to be re-examition of class 10 Mathematics and class 12 economics subject due to paper leaks. The parents and the students were shocked at the devastating news.
The Central Board of Secondary Education  (CBSE) issued a circular informing about the re-examition and said that dates and other details for it would be posted in the board’s website. The circular announced, “The board has taken cognisance of certain happenings in the conduct of certain examitions as are being reported. With a view to uphold the sanctity of the board examitions and in the interest of fairness to the students, the board has decided to re-conduct the examitions for the following subjects”. After paper leaks re-examition of certain subjects become inevitable.
Paper leaks were not only unknown, but also unthinkable some decades back. But since last few years these incidents have become a rule rather than exception. I wonder how some people can commit such heinous crime to satisfy their lust for lucre. Do they ever think about those unfortute young students who suffer enormously due to their selfishness?
HSLC examition is the most important examition in a student’s life. After months of preparations and sleepless nights the young children appear in the examition with fear as well as with hope in their eyes. In the past the examinees never imagined that they would have to appear in the same examition again. For them it was the end of the examition and the beginning of hope for the future. But due to the ignoble activities by some crimils in so noble a sector, the future of the students are placed in jeopardy.
Parents and the students plan various schemes to enjoy the days after the examitions are over. But now a days they are not sure. turally they feel frustrated after being informed about the paper leak. I do not understand how these crimils can be so cruel to make the children so unhappy and embittered.
Lakhs of students suffered due to the unscrupulous actions of some irresponsible persons. They are apparently interested in acquiring their fortune out of the misfortune of some hapless youths.
These question leaks bring mental trauma to lakhs of innocent students. Nobody likes to appear in the same subject for the second time. This time the paper which was leaked was Mathematics in the HSLC examition, a subject dreaded by most of the students. Only yesterday the son of an acquaintance wailed that though he did not like mathematics, he did very well in the recently concluded examition. But he was terribly afraid that he may not do well in the mathematics paper, if the examition is held again. I felt very sad for the boy. His fear happens to be logical.
Meanwhile it has been reported by the media that the HRD minister Prakash Jadekar said on March 28, “The government was conducting an interl inquiry into reports claiming that the CBSE Class 10 Mathematics and Class 12 Economics papers had been leaked. A new system would be put in place from Monday to ensure no leaks take place and the government would ensure that there is no injustice”. It is a welcome move and it is hoped that the government would be successful in this noble endeavour. We hope the students would never face such terrible heart-rending event in future.
India was a land of spiritualism and people could not even dream of doing any evil thing. But now that glorious spiritualism is lost to us and materialism has gripped us. Man today has become morally bankrupt. Once in the past our country had peace. Even during British rule the situation was not so bad. At least there was trust and good will amongst the people, which is now non-existent.
