Bandh against fuel price hike evokes total response in Jorhat

JORHAT, May 30: The 12-hour bandh called by the Rashtriya Yuva Morcha and several other local organizations like AJYCP and AASU on Wednesday was total in the district of Jorhat and its adjacent areas as all long and short-distance vehicles were off the road. Airways from Rowriah airport, connection between Majuli river island district to other parts of the country and moreover connection between Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland via Jorhat district were stalled from 5am to 5pm. All business establishments, schools and other educational institutions, government and semi-government offices remained closed. Trains like Guwahati-Jorhat intercity express, Jan Satabdi Express, Jorhat-Tinsukia passenger Express, Mariani-Dimapur Express, Ledo-Jorhat- New Alipurduar passenger Express were cancelled following the bandh called over fuel price hike.

Irate picketers from several organizations burnt tyres at various places and even pelted stones on vehicles. Police managed to pick over 24 picketers from several areas from the district but they were later released on PR Bond, said Vaibhav Nimbalkar, Jorhat Superintendent of Police, on Wednesday.
