Protest meeting held to oppose Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

JOYSAGAR, May 30: A protest meeting was held in Sivasagar on Wednesday which was organized by the Manab Adhikar Sangram Samittee (MASS) at the Rongpur Jyoti Club in Station Chariali. Kamal Bora and Rajani Kakoti jointly anchored the meeting where leaders of various social organizations took part. The protesters firmly opposed the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and urged the Union Government as well as State government to take a bold stand against this proposed move and to come forward to save the identity of the indigenous people of the State.

Meanwhile, the left party coordination committee of the Sivasagar district also opposed the proposed bill. The left party coordination committee members took out a protest rally in the town on Wednesday and the protesters sharply criticized the BJP-led governments both at the Centre and the State. The left organizations also opposed the fuel price hike in the country in recent times. Besides, the transport and motor workers’ trade union also called a bandh today to protest the fuel price hike and due to this bandh, normal life was partially paralyzed and business establishments and educational institutions also remained closed in the town.
