Southwest monsoon to hit Northeast India by tomorrow; conditions favourable for monsoon advancement; Kerala already impacted

GUWAHATI, May 30: The southwest monsoon will hit Northeast India by Friday causing heavy rainfall and bringing respite to people from the scorching heat in the region.

The southwest monsoon has already set in over Kerala three days ahead of its normal date. Widespread rainfall occurred over Kerala during the past three to four days. The 14 rainfall monitoring stations for monsoon onset over Kerala have reported more than 60 per cent rainfall from May 25.

A bulletin issued by the Indian Meteorological Department has stated that conditions are favourable for the advance of the southwest monsoon into some parts of the northeastern States, some more parts of east central and northeast Bay of Bengal, parts of central Arabian Sea, some parts of coastal and south interior Karnataka and remaining parts of Kerala during the next few days. An official at the Regional Meteorological Centre, Borjhar told this reporter that the southwest monsoon is fast advancing towards the Northeast and the region is expected to experience heavy rainfall by the end of this week.

Most of northeastern States have been experiencing less pre-monsoon rainfall for the last three years. This year, Mizoram has recorded 58 per cent less (actual 129.3mm, normal 311.2 mm) rainfall followed by 40 per cent in Arunachal Pradesh, 28 per cent in Meghalaya, 26 per cent in Nagaland, 22 per cent in Assam and 15 per cent in Manipur. Only Tripura has recorded 9 per cent above the normal (actual 459.1 mm, normal 421.6mm) rainfall. The less pre-monsoon rainfall has been recorded between March 1 and May 8.

On the other hand, in view of the fast advancing of the southwest monsoon, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority has alerted emergency response units in all the districts to tackle possible floods this year.

At least 14 units of the force have been deployed to assist people during floods. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel and the army have also started flood-preparedness exercises.

The people of Assam reeling under the blazing sun for the last few days are now looking to the sky for the soothing monsoon clouds.
