SILCHAR, Feb 4: New Delhi based noted social activist Swami Agnivesh after going through the report of the Barak Human Rights Protection Committee on the starvation deaths in Bhuvan Valley Tea Estate has written to the Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, for addressing the situation on priority in order to pre-empt further human tragedy.
Describing the report as very disturbing, Swami Agnivesh in his letter said “it is most unfortunate that poor tea garden labourers should still work in adverse conditions and meet such sad end.” He called the deaths due to starvation and other factors like denial of wages and rations for weeks as inhuman and pathetic. He requested the Chief Minister to look into the report with all seriousness it deserves and address the situation with all the urgency and expediency at his command. |
