SILCHAR, July 22: The newly formed Barak Shilpi Sangsad observed the 150th Birth Anniversary of eminent Bengali poet, playwright, lyricist and musician Dwijendra Lal Roy, who created a sub-genre in Bengali music, in a befitting manner at a function held at Silchar Press Club recently.
Sankar Dey, general secretary of Barak Nagarik Sangsad, described the works of the great poet. He said that the famous song Dhano Dhanyo Pushpo Bhora...of the poet during the freedom movement could be easily compared to Saare Jahan Se Achchha.... Dey also said that the overwhelming love for the motherland and the immense contribution in the field of music and literature of the genius poet would continue to enthuse millions of people for generations to come. He also underlined the importance of celebrating the Birth Anniversary of such great figure of Bengali literature.
Born in Nadia district in 1863, Dwijendra Lal Roy penned hundreds of poems, besides authoring a number of plays on social, historical and mythological topics. He was also a well-known composer of modern songs. Known mostly for his patriotic compositions like Dhana Dhanya Pushpa Bhara, Banga Amar Janani Amar, Amar Bharat and Patitauddharini Gangey, his songs are known as Dwijendrageeti or the songs of Dwijendra Lal.
His collections of poems and songs have been published as Aryagatha (1894), Hasir Gan (1900), Mandra (1902), Alekhya (1907) and Triveni(1912). The literary genius died in 1913 at the age of 49 in Kolkata. |
