Silchar, March 20: Major General Upendra Dwivedi has taken over as the Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) from Major General M V Chandran decorated with Yudh Seva Medal and Sena Medal on Sunday. Major General Upendra Dwivedi has previously commanded 26 Sector Assam Rifles in Manipur, besides holding many distinguished command and staff appointments at various levels in the army. A highly qualified and professionally competent officer, he has been aptly handpicked for the challenging and prestigious assignment.
Major General M V Chandran relinquished his command as Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) after an extremely eventful and fruitful tenure which witnessed attainment of new pinnacles of glory. Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) geographically is the largest in terms of area covering the states of Tripura, Mizoram, four districts of South Assam and Jiribam district of Manipur. He effectively tackled the insurgency in South Assam and Jiribam and successfully worked towards making Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) truly the ‘Friends of Hill People’.
He was also instrumental in executing a large number of substantial ‘Civic Action Projects’ across the area which in turn had a positive impact towards overall development of the society, especially the remote and backward areas. He ensured synergy with political and civil hierarchy, orchestrated perception management, conceptualized comprehensive development of the area by addressing core issues through people friendly initiatives while simultaneously fine-tuning administrative setup of men under his command to further improve their quality of life. Major General M V Chandran was given a warm farewell from civil administration. He expressed his gratitude to all sections of people and members of the media for their sustained support and affection.
