GUWAHATI, May 22: The All Assam Lawyers’ Association has slammed Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for his statement on Akhil Gogoi’s hunger strike in the city.
The Chief Minister dismissed Akhil’s protest stating that the government was not going to invite him for talks. The Chief Minister stated, “Akhil’s protest had political motives. But we are not going to invite him for talks.”
General Secretary of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) Akhil Gogoi, who has been leading the anti-big dam campaign in the State, started his indefinite hunger strike in the city from May 19.
The Association further stated that being a Chief Minister in a democratic country, Tarun Gogoi must talk to the groups which are agitating for a big cause. “The no-talks stand of the CM will not serve any purpose. The CM should immediately come forward for talks,” said Sailen Das, general secretary of the Association. Das further stated that the Chief Minister should also invite other anti-big dam groups besides the KMSS for talks.
The Association said that the health of Akhil Gogoi is deteriorating day by day. “The State Government should send a doctor to monitor the health condition of Akhil Gogoi,” he added. |
