GUWAHATI, June 23: The residents and businessmen of Jorabat today locked up the office of MBL, the company entrusted with construction of a four lane on NH-37 at 10.30 am and gheraoed seven of its officials after the latter’s failure to speed up construction of roads, that led to water-logging at the Guwahati-Jorabat junction. They angry locals also created a NH-37 blockade in the evening. Almost all communications were snapped on Friday, after a heavy rainfall inundated the area and brought traffic to the standstill. Except for a few small vehicles, that was diverted to Guwahati via Digaru, Chandrapur and Narengi by evening, all heavy vehicles were halted on the road.
The MBL had assured of completing the construction of the four lane, along with all drains and dividers, repair of roads and traffic signals of Jorabat within 15 days at a meeting held on Thursday between the Inter Dimoria Students’ body, NHAI authorities, MBL and TCIL in the presence of the Jorabat Development Committee and officials of the Sonapur circle office. However, even after their assurance, when the company did not start work on Friday, the angry locals gheraoed the MBL office on Saturday and locked it up. Later in the evening, they created a blockade on NH-37 at the Jorabat junction, shouting slogans against the MBL. The situation was brought under control only after the Sonapur Circle officer reached the spot and assured to hold a public meeting on Monday at Jorabat. |
