GUWAHATI, June 28: The residents of Tarun Nagar, situated in the heart of Guwahati city came out to the streets at 12 pm today and created a blockage at the GS road near ABC police point, demanding immediate solution to the water logging problems faced by the residents since the last five days.
Incessant rains in the past on week had filled the clogged drains, blocking all outlets for the rainwater to flow. The water logging has given rise to an artificial flood situation in the area with many bylanes immersed in the waters. The people have to walk through the flooded roads that carries with it the filth from the nearby drains. Unhappy with the administration’s inaction to solve the sufferings of the people, the locals today staged a sit-in demanding a solution from the district authorities.
The blockade which continued for 45 minutes was called off after district officials assured to provide temporary relief to the residents of the five bylanes of Tarun Nagar area. Accordingly, five rickshaws will ply from 7 am to 8 pm in the five bylanes to help people travel through the water logged bylanes free of cost. The district administration has taken the responsibilty of bearing the cost of these rickshaws. Each rickshaw will be given Rs 1,000 per day for their services.
Meanwhile, District magistrate Tankeswar Das also announced that four small and one big pump set will be put up in the Tarun Nagar area to drain out the water. Similarly, in Anil Nagar, which is facing a similar fate, 12 rickshaws have been given along with an assurance of setting more pump sets. |
