GUWAHATI, July 6: A delegation of the Citizens’ Rights Preservation Committee, Assam, met the Chief Election Commissioner of India Veeravalli Sundaram Sampath and other Election Commissioners in New Delhi today.
The delegation submitted a memorandum highlighting the deprivation of basic rights, humiliation and harassment being faced by the linguistic and religious minorities of Assam. The delegation told the Election Commission that D-voters in Assam were facing a lot of problems. They are not only deprived of their voting rights but also remained deprived of all government benefits. The delegation demanded that all D-voters’ cases pending in the Tribunals must be disposed off within the next six months and in the failure to do so, D-voters must be allowed to enjoy their fundamental and legal rights. Action must be taken against officers found responsible for marking D against genuine Indian citizens and a screening committee must be formed to screen the cases of D-voters before referring to the Tribunals. |
