GUWAHATI, July 9: The Lawyers’ Association, Guwahati, has announced that all its members (lawyers) will abstain from work on July 11 and July 12 in support of the all-India strike called by the Bar Council of India in protest against the proposed Higher Education and Research (HER) Bill, 2011.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati today, Lawyers’ Association, Guwahati president Pulin Chandra Goswami said, “The Bar Council of India is of the view that the Higher Education and Research Bill, 2011, the National Accreditation Regulatory Authority for Higher Educational Institutions Bills, 2010, the Foreign Educational Institutions (Regulation of entry and operations) Bill, 2010 and the National Law School Bills, 2011 are a deliberate attempt on the legal profession. They are an attempt to allow the entry of foreign institutions in the country. Law education will then become out of bounds for poor students. The HRD ministry is bent on weakening the lawyers’ bodies. We, therefore, extend support to the agitation programme decided by the Bar Council of India on July 11 and July 12.” |
