GUWAHATI, July 17: Activists of the Brihattar Christian Basti Sachetan Nagarik Mancha today condemned the molestation of a girl in the Christain Basti locality on July 9 and demanded a ban on all liquor shops and bars operating in the area.
Speaking to mediapersons here today, Jayanta Deka, convenor of the Mancha said, “We have been raising the issue with the authorities since September last year. Whatever unfolded on July 9 was not the sole incident of such nature to have occured in the area. Several anti-social activities have also been reported before.”
Demanding a shut down of the 12 liquor shops and several bars operating in the area, Deka said that these bars have created a unhealthy atmosphere in the entire Christian Basti area and need to be closed down. Deka further said,“There have been numerous incidents of eve-teasing, stalking, molestation, mugging, theft and chain snatching reported from this area. Until these bars are shut down, such anti-social activities will continue to disrupt the peace of the area.”
Deka further said that all liqour shops in the city should be re-located to a new red alert area where these shops could operate. He also said that the government should form a rapid action team of police to look into such crimes. Meanwhile, Charan Deka, Advisor of the Mancha also spoke on the occasion. |
