Sonowal stresses making police stations more people friendly

GUWAHATI, April 20: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday paid a surprise visit to the Basistha Police Station here to check general preparedness of the police station.
Sonowal, who has kept the Home portfolio with himself, took a round of the premises, catching policemen and officials by surprise. The Chief Minister interacted with the constables and home guards besides officials and took stock of the duty deployment, register, man power, and overall infrastructural condition of the police station.
He also examined the registers and other documents of the police station.
The Chief Minister during his visit to the police station said that police must act with more commitment and dedication at the interest of the people.
He said that police must that the people can approach police station without any apprehension whenever situation arises.
Sonowal also stressed on making police stations more people friendly. He however hailed the dutifulness and dedication displayed by the police personnel.
“The police stations must maintain their data properly and they must ensure it that no innocent people are harassed,” Sonowal said.
He also directed the officials to rectify the errors found in the registers.
“Police administration must be strengthen to enable them to fight against corruption besides providing security to the people,” the Chief Minister pointed out.
“They must be made well equipped to face any sort of eventuality,” he added.
Stating that there is a requirement to increase the number of constables in police stations, the Chief Minister said that the government has taken various steps for modernization of Assam police.
He also informed that his government would also fill up the vacancies and increase the number of police constables in different police stations.
Sonowal asked the officers and other personnel of Basistha police station to have a close vigil on the areas come under their purview and prepare a crime graph and develop a strategy to negotiate with crimes of different sorts.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Chief Minister’s media adviser Hrishikesh Goswami and legal adviser Shantanu Bharali.
