Gulzarilal Nanda

Gulzarilal Nanda was the second Prime Minister of India who served twice as acting Prime Minister for very short periods of time. He was born on July 4, 1898 in Sialkot, Punjab which now lies in Pakistan. Before 1947 he was popularly known as the owner of ‘Nanda Bus Service’. He worked as a research scholar on Labor problems at Allahabad University and later became Professor of Economics at National College in Bombay in 1921.

It was during this time that he was greatly influenced by Mahatma Gandhi. In 1921, Nanda joined Gandhi in his Non Cooperation Movement and served a jail term for his involvement in Gandhi’s Satyagraha. In 1947 he went to Geneva as government delegate to the International Labor Conference. He then became the Vice-chairman of the Planning Commission in March 1950. He also served as Labor Minister of the Bombay Constituency. He was elected to the Lok Sabha thrice. In his first term in 1952, he served as the minister for Planning, Irrigation and Power.

In 1957, in his second term he was appointed as the Union Minister for Labor, Employment and Planning. He became acting Prime Minister for the first time after Jawaharlal Nehru’s death. He served for less than a month until the Congress, the ruling party, chose the next head. He became the acting Prime Minister for a second time after Lal Bahadur Shastri’s death in 1966. This time also he held office for a very short time until the new Prime Minister was elected.

Although he had served for very short periods as the acting Prime Minister, he is remembered for his work as Labor Minister. He was an ardent follower of Gandhi’s principles and was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India. Gulzarilal Nanda died on January 15,1998.

Gray Whale

Gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) are cetaceans that belong to the Suborder Mysticeti, the Baleen whales. Baleen whales, also called filter-feeding whales, have 2 sets of plates that extend from the upper jaw and enable the animal to filter food from the oceans in which it swims. Gray whales grow to lengths of 13m-15m (43ft-49ft) and weigh 14-35 tonnes.

Gray whales have shorter baleen plates than other members of the suborder Mysticeti. Their skin is a mixture of different grays and is speckled by barnacles and whale lice. Their flukes (tails) have deep notches in them.

Great White Shark

The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), also known as the ‘white shark’ or ‘white pointer’, is a powerful swimmer and efficient predator that inhabits temperate and subtropical regions of the world’s oceans. Adult white sharks reach lengths of 6m-8m (20ft-26ft) and can weigh 2 tons (2 tonnes) or more. Females are in general, larger than males.

The white shark is usually a solitary hunter, feeding primarily on seals, dophins, large fish, and sea lions. White sharks occasionally attack humans and as a result have earned the infamous reputation of ‘man-eaters’. White sharks are not believed to attack humans due to hunger but instead are thought to attack out of aggression, territoriality, or by mistake (since a person on a surfboard may resemble a seal).

If You Were

If you were busy being kind,

Before you knew it, you would find

You’d soon forget to think ’twas true

That someone was unkind to you.

If you were busy being glad,

And cheering people who are sad,

Although your heart might ache a bit,

You’d soon forget to notice it.

If you were busy being good,

And doing just the best you could,

You’d not have time to blame some man

Who’s just doing the best he can.

If you were busy being right,

You’d find yourself too busy quite

To criticise your neighbour long

Because he’s busy being wrong.

Friendship

Some ships are black,

Some ships are blue

I like the ships

Which are called friendships

And are always True

Friendship are onion

If you cut it then cry.

If I Can Stop One Heart from Breaking

If I can stop one heart from breaking,

I shall not live in vain;

If I can ease one life the aching,

Or cool one pain,

Or help one robin

Unto his nest again,

I shall not live in vain.

Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the think you can think up if only you try!
