GUWAHATI, Aug 14: Following the violence in the Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD), stray incidents of assault on students of the Northeast, particularly from Assam, have been reported from various places of the country. In order to ensure the security of students from Assam, the Assam Police has got in touch with the DGPs and Home Secretaries of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Assam DGP JN Choudhury said, “We are in touch with the police officials of these States. They have taken measures to ensure the safety of the students from Assam. Helplines have been set up. We are monitoring the situation.” On the other hand, sources said that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had also taken up the issue with his counterparts in these States. Some mischief mongers are also trying to create panic among people by spreading rumours and the police are trying to deal with these mischief mongers, said the sources. Meanwhile, eight MPs from the Northeast have also written a letter to Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, urging him to ensure the security of students and people from the Northeast in other parts of the country. |
