‘If the Assam Government does not take urgent steps in this regard, the situation may worsen further’

JORHAT, Aug 17: An indefinite economic blockade has been imposed against Nagaland from Friday by the local people along with four associations at Merapani near Titabar following the encroachment of Assam’s land by the Nagaland Police.
The economic blockade has been imposed by the local people and four other associations by closing the Ukha-Golaghat link road from Friday.
The situation at Gar Basti of Merapani continues to remain tense after the burning of houses of three Assamese people by the Naga miscreants. The Nagaland Police imposed an embargo on ploughing of paddy fields by the Assamese people in the 250 bighas of land at the Gar Basti area.
The Assamese farmers had to leave their paddy fields resulting in panic situation in the Merapani area. Though the Assam Police personnel rushed to the spot, the situation is yet to become normal due to the high handedness of the Nagaland Police.
Due to the prevailing fear psychosis in the area, some Assamese people left their houses which were subsequently occupied by the Naga people.
This forced the local people to impose indefinite economic blockade against Nagaland by closing the Ukha-Golaghat Road with the help of four organizations including the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS).
Sources said if the State Government does not take urgent steps in that regard, the situation might worsen further. |
