| 17 people declared as foreigners |

GOALPARA, Oct 4: Seventeen persons were declared as foreigners on Thursday by the Foreigners Tribunal in Goalpara. Disposing 63 D-voters’ cases, the tribunal declared 10 contesting parties as illegal immigrants and seven people as exparte as they failed to appear before the tribunal. However, 42 persons were declared as genuine Indian citizens. Four D-voters died during the period of trial. Meanwhile, the State Government has appointed a second member in the Goalpara Foreigners Tribunal. Retired district judge Dipali Borborah will join the tribunal soon. There are at present 65 inmates in the detention camp at the Goalpara district jail. |
