By our Staff Reporter GUWAHATI, Nov 2: Activists of the Assam State Anganwadi Workers and Helpers’ Association today gheraoed the office of the Directorate of Social Welfare at Uzanbazaar in support of their demands. Assam State Anganwadi Workers and Helpers’ Association Kamrup district president Lalita Kalita said, “There are posts of anganwadi workers lying vacant. We have long demanded that anganwadi helpers should be promoted to the post of workers. But the government is not doing this. It is not filling up the vacant posts and neither is the government promoting the helpers. Similarly, there are 280 posts of supervisors lying vacant across the State. The government is not making any move to fill up these vacant posts and neither is it promoting the workers to the post of supervisor.” Kalita further said, “For every 20 anganwadi centres, there should be one supervisor. But in Kamrup district, there is a supervisor for 80 to 90 anganwadi centres.” The Director of the Social Welfare Department assured the protesters that a decison on their demands would be taken by November 15. Kalita said, “Unless our demands are fulfilled by November 15, we will hold a massive agitation on November 20 and around 50,000 people will take part in the mass protest.” |
