GUWAHATI, Jan 11: The BJP high command feels that if the BJP Assam Pradesh is to win the day, it has to win the panchayat polls slated to be held in the State next year. The top leaders of the party are of the opinion that without winning the panchayat poll, the win of the party in the State cannot get longevity. This apart, without winning the panchayat poll in the State the BJP-led governments at Dispur and in New Delhi can never make their popular schemes reach the target beneficiaries.
Soon after assuming the office of party president in the State, Ranjit Dass has been working in full dear with grassroots-level party workers. Well aware of the fact that the panchayat poll will not be a cakewalk for the party as the foundation of the Opposition Congress is much stronger than that of the BJP at the grassroots-level in Assam, Dass has been working in rural Assam right from the word go.
According to BJP sources, most of the gaon panchayats, anchalik panchayats and zila parishads in Assam have been under the Congress. “Even though the Congress has suffered setbacks after a number of GP, AP and ZPC members joining the BJP when the party made it to Dispur, that edge isn’t enough for us to win the pancahayat poll. Since the Lok Sabha election in the country is slated for 2019, we need to win the panchayat poll in Assam in 2018 as that poll will be considered as the lok Sabha poll dress rehearsal of the party in the State,” party workers said, and added: “This panchayat is crucial for us as we’ve failed to reach a number of interior pockets in the State where we failed to perform as expected in the last Assembly election. What continues to haunt us is despite having the membership strength of 25 lakh, how can’t we make it to these interior areas in the State as yet? This makes it ample clear that we’re still to do enough at the grassroots level in the State.”
