SHILLONG, June 28: The East Khasi Hill District Administration and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) arrived on a compromise formula on the venue to hold the “sit in protest” in Shillong on Friday.
The KSU along with other Shillong based units of the North-Eastern Students Organization (NESO) wanted to sit in front of the Raj Bhavan to display the North East’s displeasure on the discrimination against the students of the region studying in different parts of country, besides the issues like influx, lifting of the Armed Forces Special Power’s Act (AFSPA) from NE region and exemtion of the Indo-Nepal Treaty from Northeast.” District Magistrate Sanjay Goyal has already promulgated Section 144 CrPc in front of the Governor’s residence to prevent activities that might cause inconvenience to the staff of the Governor’s House and other government offices. Goyal told The Sentinel that his officials have already contacted the leaders of the KSU, asking them to use a space just outside the All India Radio premises for the ‘dharna’. However, the president of the KSU, Daniel Khriem told The Sentinel, “We wanted to sit in front of the Raj Bhavan for our peaceful sit in protest,” adding, “Let’s see what comes after these restrictions.” |
