Lyngdoh who has never lost an election is pitted against his protégé and Congress nominee Dr Adviser Pariong

SHILLONG, Feb 2: Twenty four candidates including veteran politician Hopingstone Lyngdoh of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), Meghalaya Assembly Deputy Speaker Sanbor Shullai (NCP) and Congress legislator Samuel M Sangma (Independent), who was denied party ticket, filed their nominations on Saturday.
Lyngdoh who has never lost an election is pitted against his protégé and Congress nominee Dr Adviser Pariong.
It may be recalled that Pariong had won the 2008 elections on a HSPDP ticket.
Umroi legislator Stanlywiss Rymbai also filed his nomination papers on Saturday. Rymbai was denied the Congress party ticket and instead was allotted to businessman Ngaitlang Dhar.
Congress MLA Samuel M Sangma who was also denied Congress ticket filed as Independent from Baghmara. Meanwhile, the widow of Masonsing Sangma, Bluebell R Sangma also filed her nomination from Chokpot.
The other candidates who submitted their nominations on Saturday included Nongshken MDC Grace Mary Kharpuri as Independent from Shella.
The other independent candidates who filed their nominations on Saturday included Teiborlang Pathaw from Mawlai, Kimfa Sidney Marbaniang from Rambrai–Jyrngam, Lowis Sangma from Mawshynrut, Kredithson Ch Marak from North Tura, Roger Benny A Sangma from North Tura and Aderina K Sangma from South Tura.
Out of 24 hopefuls, who filed their nomination on Saturday, nine are Independents, six NCPs, two each were from Congress, UDP, BJP and HSPDP and there was a lone NPP candidate.
Apart from Shullai and Bluebell, the other NCP candidates who filed nominations are Satyendra Kumar from Pynthorumkhrah, Tobias R Marak from Mawsynram, Andreas T Sangma from North Tura and Sanjiv R Marak from Gambegre.
The two UDP candidates are Khraw Kupar Jyrwa from Mawsynram and Dr Mizanur Rahman Kazi from Rajabala.
The BJP candidates include Anil Hajong from Rangsakona and Augustine Lakiang from South Shillong. The two Congress candidates are Jrop Sing Nongkhlaw of Congress from Shella, Besterfield N Sangma of Congress from Gambegre.
Witting Mawsor of HSPDP from Mawshynrut and Renikton Lyngdoh of National People’s Party (NPP) from Mawkyrwat also filed their nominations on Saturday.
Till Saturday, 84 candidates have filed their nominations. The last date of filing nominations is February 6. |
