SHILLONG, Jan 11: A huge quantity of cannabis (ganja) was seized by Custom officials on Tuesday, authorities said. According to BS Suhag, Additional Commissioner, Customs Preventive Unit, Shillong while acting on specific information intercepted one container truck bearing Bihar registration number near Diengpasoh Toll Gate on Shillong Bye Pass.
The customs officials seized 744.070 kg of high quality cannabis (ganja) valued over Rs 43 lakh.
The consignment of ganja was concealed in a specially built secret chamber made behind the driver’s cabin. The truck has also been seized.
The driver and handyman of the truck have been arrested under the provisions of the Narcotics Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and a case has been registered.
Shuag said, “The origin of the ganja is the state of Tripura and the consignment was destined to Bihar, where cannabis has a very high demand.”
The Custom official also said that in the recent past Tripura has become a major source of contraband Ganja.
Investigation has been initiated to apprehend other persons involved in this illicit narcotics trade.
