SHILLONG, Jan 11: The proscribed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) is down but not out, even as the police acknowledge that the outfit with around thirty odd cadres is on the run. The dreaded self-styled commander-in –chief of the outfit, Sohan D Shira and others wanted leaders identified as Kamdak and Megam are the individuals who are hiding in two districts of Garo Hills.
Shira is understood to be hiding in East Garo Hills with more than half a dozen well close aides while the other groups are in different locations in East and South Garo Hills district. The Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Swaraj Bir Singh did not differ on the inputs gathered by The Sentinel.
He said on Wednesday, “The GNLA has been weakened but there is certain nucleus located in separate areas that needed to be overrun”.
Interestingly, the Garo militant outfit is still in touch with the ULFA leadership. “Dristi Rajkhowa @ Manoj Rabha is very much in touch with the GNLA C-in-C for the convenience sake”, the DGP stated, while pointing out at the camaraderie that stems from Rajkhowa marital status. Deistic Rajkhewa@ Manoj Rabha married a Garo lady and his links through the then GNLA area commander identified as Philliport is well known.
Although there is no visible activities of the GNLA in the past two months, Swaraj Bir Singh categorically stated, “We are not complacent and our objectives to eradicate such criminals will go on.”
The GNLA suffered a huge setback in 2016 when scores of its leaders and cadres surrendered before the state police.
