Six Non-metro Airports to be Leased out under Public-Private-Partnership, Guwahati Airport in the List

Guwahati: In a new approval made by the Union Government on Thursday, six non-metro airports gets “in principle” approval for operating, managing and developing under a Public Private Partnership (PPP).

The six places selected for developing the six airports include — Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram and Mangaluru.

A government statement quotes, that the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given “…in-principle approval for leasing out six airports of Airport Authority of India (AAI)…for operation, management and development under PPP.”

The cabinet states, “While these PPP experiments have helped create world-class airports, it has also helped AAI (Airports Authority of India) in enhancing its revenues and focusing on developing airports and air navigation infrastructure in the rest of the country.”

Currently, the airports being managed under the PPP model include Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Cochin. as the PPP mode has been able to make the airports maintain world-class standard along with also helping the AAI in increasing its revenues, this new step by the Union Government will certainly help the newly named airports to build an impressive look.

As instances of quality work delivered by the PPP model and the top-class status gained by the airports, the Delhi and Hyderabad airport are to be named at the top.

The official statement further states, “PPP in infrastructure projects brings efficiency in service delivery, expertise, enterprise and professionalism, apart from harnessing the needed investments in the public sector.”

Terming the airport sector as a top contender among infrastructure sectors, the statement adds. “International operators and investors prefer brownfield airport expansion opportunities with having more than 3-4 million passenger capacity,” the statement said.
