IMPHAL APRIL 12: One daily wage earner and his accomplice have been remanded to police custody on the charge of gang raping a 16-year-old girl in presence of her seven-years-old sister in a paddy field on Wednesday.
Reports said that the angry villagers had overpowered the two alleged rapists and were handed over to the police. The culprits are identified as Yumnam Bobby (37) and Leimapokpam Raghumani (47) both of Thoubal Athokpam which is the home village of the Chief Minister Okram Ibobi and also his wife’s Okram Landhoni constituency.
Bobby is a daily wage earner who was eking out a living by joining the road repairing works along the highway. Both parents of the victim are runs a kiosk selling cigarttes and other eatables. He had become friendly with the parents and the teenaged girl.
On Tuesday afternoon the labourer and his accomplice came in a sleek car and bought something from the kiosk. Since the parents did not have change for the Rs 1000 note it was assured that the money would be paid later. They also took away the girl and her younger sister saying that they would drop her at their home. However, they took the girls at the secluded outhouse in the paddy field where they allegedly raped her repeatedly in front of the minor.
The villagers who launched a search operation found them in the paddy field and after thrashing them, the villagers informed the police. Police arrested them on the charge of gang rape and took them into five days custody.
There have been many instances of rapes and gang rapes in Manipur in the past few days. Some insurgent groups have already announced that they would give capital punishment to the criminals.
