Rape victim harassed in police custody

From our Special Correspondent
IMPHAL, Dec 31: A young housewife, who had been raped in the absence of her husband has been harassed and even detained in police custody for five days on the pretext of taking her statement. Omorjit Soibam (44) of Thoubal district had dragged out the housewife and raped her on December 27 night. The victim’s husband is a mason and stays at Imphal for work.
Based on a complaint, the police had arrested the accused. Meanwhile, the victim has been harassed in the name of questioning and recording her statement. The chief judicial magistrate Thoubal has granted her five days’ police custody. The angry women vigilantes said that it amounts to causing harassment to the rape victim. They also said that no family member of the victim was allowed inside the court. However, both the accused and victim were taken together.
Their statements were taken by forcing them to sit face to face. They said that it was unheard of anywhere that the rape victim is detained for five days in the police station on the pretext of taking  statement.
