Assam Film Awards to Resume In May

 The Assam State Film (Finance and Development) Corporation will resume conferring state film awards, which was discontinued for the past three years owing to release of inadequate number of Assamese films.

Corporation chairman Jatin Bora said the award ceremony will be held with a three-day programme on the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra premises from May 11 to 13. A festival, featuring various tribal language films of the state and Assamese films, will also be held on the occasion. "It is very unfortunate that the state film award was discontinued for the past three years because of lack of adequate number of films. But from this year we are resuming the venture," Bora said.
The award will be given in various categories that are yet to be decided. "We shall announce the winners' list very soon," he added.
As part of its attempt to revive the regional film industry, the Corporation will start producing Assamese films by providing full financial assistance to directors. Bora said very soon they will send a proposal to every state government department, stating that all departmental films and documentaries to be produced under the corporation banner. "We will send the proposal to every department. Through this initiative, the corporation will also get financial benefit. We will start a project on opening new cinema halls and revamping the old ones," he added.
Cultural affairs minister Naba Kumar Doley said, "For hall renovation, we will give Rs 25 lakh while Rs 50 lakh will be provided for establishing new theatres. We have started the process of land acquisition to set up new halls. We will organise a children's film festival in June or July." 
The corporation has started digitalising various old Assamese films. Bora said in the first stage, it will take 50 old films for digitalisation.    
A theatre, Jonaki, will be inaugurated on the office premises of the corporation soon where regional filmmakers will be able to screen their films free of cost.
The corporation will also organise various workshops on films across the state from this year.
