Kopil Bora to Promote Assamese Theatre

A ahaar - a major landmark Assamese play written by eminent litterateur Arun Sarma in the mid-sixties and considered to be the first play of the Absurd in the history of Assamese literature, was recently staged to critical praise and appreciation at the Madhabdeva International Auditorium of Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra.

The play that changed the very nature of contemporary theatre in the State, is infact the first venture of Kopil Bora & Company, a production house started by popular artiste Kopil Bora and his friends to promote Assamese theatre.
'Aahaar' has a single female protagonist, who plays five different characters within the same play. Popular actress Zerifa Wahid enacted the challenging roles of a lover, a wife, a mother, a sex worker and the narrator of the play. This is something unique and appealing feature of the play.
The four central male characters were enacted by Kopil Bora, Ranjul Boruah, Suruj Kalita and Partha Hazarika. The play was dedicated to the memory of three of the state's eminent theatre stalwarts - pioneer English theatre director in Assam Porjanya Babi Barua, Natya Prabhakar Satya Prasad Barua and Padma Shri awardee Arun Sarma.
