A remarkable tribute to Dr Hazarika

Atotal of 5,406 guitarists from across the country simultaneously played and paid a tribute to Assam's most celebrated musical icon Late Dr. Bhupen Hazarika at the Sarusajai sports complex on June 3, in the process also entering their names in the Limca Book of Records. The ensemble, which played the musical icon's immortal number 'Bristrirno Parore...', entered the Limca Book of Records but fell short by less than a thousand participants to enter the Guinness Book of World Records as rain played the spoilsport.

The participating guitarists were mostly from the northeast region. The current Guinness Record for the largest guitar ensemble is held by Poland, after 6,346 guitarists played a common tune at Wroclaw on May 1, 2009. 'We actually wanted to pay a musical tribute to Bhupen-da, who passed away last year. However, the idea of making a record for the largest guitar ensemble was also there,' said Ankur Dutta, one of the organisers of the event. The event, which drew many veteran musicians of Assam as also members of younger generation, played the evergreen tune of Bhupen-da for about seven minutes at the Sarusojai Stadium here.

The previous Limca record for the largest guitar ensemble was created in Shillong in 2007 when 1,730 guitarists played together Bob Dylan's famous number 'Knockin on Heaven's Door...'. 'We are happy that people came out in such large numbers,' said Dutta, adding that the ensemble has been given a provisional certificate for creating a new national record by Limca Book of Records. 'Now we are going to try for the world record for the largest guitar ensemble'. Thousands of music lovers from various parts of the State and outside thronged the sports complex to witness what may be billed as a historic moment.

Ashirwad Theatre announces new plays for 2012-13

Ashirwad Theatre led by the much experienced producer-actor-director Robin Neog is undergoing a lot of change in terms of plays, techniques and devices. The theatre troupe is devoted to making plays relevant to contemporary audiences.

In a world ruled by rigid formulae, it has to some extent succeeded in balancing both style and substance to create something special, thereby infusing new vigor into the mobile industry. Over the years, the theatrical performances have found genuine appeal and popularity. One can’t help but admire Neog's bravado in drafting a star like Jatin Bora in the troupe's first year itself. It was considered a risky proposition then. But the collaboration turned out be a resounding success. It has to be mentioned that no other theatre troupe has achieved the kind of success that Ashirwad did with Jatin. The troupe also found reasonable success with choreographer-actor Ashim Baishya. Since his foray in cinema with the super-hit 'Joubane Amoni Kare', this talented artiste has kept us entertained with his comic timing and dancing prowess. Audience expectations increased ten-fold after Ashirwad staged 'Ma-Deuta Aru Maina'. Ashirwad has always staged plays written by eminent dramatists of the State. Producer Robin Neog is a one man powerhouse as he does everything on his plays whether it is acting, producing or directing. When it comes to grasping the psyche of modern audience, there is no one better than Neog. The plays produced by him always invariably please his audience and continue to build a following.

This time, the theatre troupe is planning something exceptional with the popular romantic pair Syamantika and Nayan Nilim. Ashirwad's plays for the 2012-13 session include popular dramatist Abhijit Bhattacharjya's 'Monmohini' and 'Anjana'. 'Monmohini' is basically a coming of age tale about two star-crossed lovers in the backdrop of vicious politics. Robin Neog has informed that Bihu songs will also be used in the play. Ashirwad also stars artistes like Robin Neog, Parag Sarma, Haren Malakar, Devismita, Anjanjyoti Bez, etc.
