Abhijit Rabha
Born to be wild!
Aiyushman Dutta

What is man, if not an animal? The only factor which separates him from other animals is his use of emotions, his use of intuition and intelligence. The fact remains that we are animals, albeit intelligent ones. However, as much as we have evolved and adopted new forms of technology into our lives, we have deviated from our basic roots to a hitherto in-between region. When you do meet people who still believe in acting out their animal instincts and feel uncomfortable with hypocrisy, materialism and all the other boons of modern day living, we lose no time in labelling him as an outcast.
Being a music lover, the number Born to be wild, by the American rock band, Steppenwolf, keeps reverberating in my mind whenever I meet Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Abhijit Rabha. His love for the wilderness, his being uncomfortable in the chaos of the city and towns, ........

A Thought for our Environment
Swapna Goswami

In the present day, one of the most discussed topics is the ‘Global Warming’. Meetings are held on this issue by the world leaders as well as by the UNO. But, in practical field, it would be difficult to see any behavioural changes in public life or in the government activities. The World Environment Day is observed on June 5, every year. Planting of saplings by the ministers as well as by the students are done as usual. It is doubtful whether even 2% of the saplings are surviving or not. Because, once the saplings are planted, no body is maintaining it. Deforestation, felling of road-side trees, unabated growth of human population and influx of population in the cities, under-ground water crisis and growing air pollution indicate only a dismal sign of impending calamities..........

How to avoid being a loser?
HEMANTA KUMAR SARMAH

Feng Shui has laid down some rules which should be followed by all to attract richness in the house. Many households face poverty because the occupants have neglected the basic thumb rules which are applicable in vaastu also. 1.The planet Venus rules the prosperity energy. Wherever there is clutter and junk, positive energy will not remain. Energy will stagnate and Venus will not enter such a household. So clear all junk and clutter immediately. 2.Broken objects should not be kept in home. There is a saying, ‘if your belongings are broken, you probably are too!’ Replace any broken utensil, machinery, bulbs, mirrors etc. 3.DO NOT keep dead and withering plants. Decomposed plants attract negative energy. That is why dried flowers and plants should be avoided too..........

The Perfect Murder
Orindom Borgohain

Thirty runs needed in the last four overs. The bowler readied himself to deliver the ball for the 47th over of the match. The batsman was Aveek. In came the bowler amidst the raucous shout of the spectators. The bowler let loose the ball in an action similar to that of Muralitharan. Aveek pushed the ball towards forward short leg. In the meantime, the non-striker already ran for the non-existent run. Aveek had no option but to go for the run as the run-rate was already increasing. All of a sudden, there was a shrill cry from Aveek and he fell down on the pitch. Blood gushed out from the back of his head in rivulets. Everybody was stunned to silence. Proloy Chakraborty was a student of BSc second year in a city ......

Zangfai: Tradition told in gold

The dress and the jewellery are an integral part of any society reflecting its traditions and culture.
Traditional Asomiya jewellery is the pride and identity of our Asomiya culture. Come Bihu and without wearing the much sought after muga mekhela chadar and matching Gejera or Dug dugi or Lokapara set with it, Bihu would lose its colorful grandeur. The Asomiya jewellery has been steeped in history because it was the Ahom Swargadeos who patronized it first and the tradition has been tried to be kept intact by a few concerned persons now.
We met Lakhimi Baruah Bhuyan, the proprietor of Zangfai, an outlet for traditional Asomiya jewellery situated at M R D Road, Silpukhuri. She has been in this business for six years now, as she had started this outlet in April 2002.
We were curious about the meaning of the somewhat unique and exotic name of the shop and.....
