Ten AAMSU members arrested in Dibrugarh |
From our Staff Correspondent
DIBRUGARH, June 15: Ten members of All Assam Moran Students’ Union (AAMSU) arrested last night were sent to jail custody today. On the basis of an FIR lodged by the controversial Shivani Gas and Oil Exploration Company and Nabayug Engineering authorities, Tinsukia Police arrested the vice-president, Naba Moran, and general secretary, Jyoti Moni Moran, apart from Rahim Moran, Mintu Moran, Anil Chetia, Bhaskar Jyoti Moran, Mukesh Chetia, Sunanda Moran and Jintu Moran of the organization from their central office at Borguri on June 14. “We consider the way Tinsukia Police arrested our members by trespassing into our central office at Borguri on the basis of a complaint lodged by some controversial businessmen as direct insult to the entire Moran community,” the advisor of AAMSU, Tarun Baruah said.
The response to the first 12-hour of the 72-hour Tinsukia district bandh, which was called by AAMSU in protest against the arrest and lathi charge on its members who staged road blockade at Makum on June 14, was spontaneous. However, it was marked by sporadic violence at Ditong, Makum and Doomdooma. Normal life was crippled in the district.
Activists of AAMSU gheraoed the Doomdooma police station today. The agitation was going on till the filing of this report. On the other hand, police resorted to lathi charge on AAMSU members, who had gheraoed Dithong police station today. According to AAMSU sources, a number of agitators were injured in the incident. The AAMSU advisor denied the allegation brought by Shivani Gas and Exploration Company of ransacking the latter’s office. He informed The Sentinel that they have been repeatedly asking the two private companies to carry out welfare activities in the areas of their operation. They kept assuring us but failed to translate it into action, he added. “A few members of our organization had gone yesterday to talk in this regard as per an earlier agreement. It ended inconclusively. However, when the representatives left, the two companies lodged a false complaint on the basis of which the police arrested ten of our members. But, these people had not even participated in the talks held yesterday,” Baruah said. He further stated that the bandh will not be called off till the unconditional release of the ten members and expulsion of three officials of Shivani Company, S Ganesh, Akash Pratim Bora and one Subramanium, from Tinsukia district. Meanwhile, Sadou Asom Mottock Yuba Chatra Sanmilan has condemned the arrest of All Assam Moran Students’ Union (AAMSU) and police atrocities. In a press communiqué, president, Ranjit Gohain, and general secretary, Roopjyoti Buragohain cautioned the Shivani and Nabayug authorities to shun the Anti-Assamese attitude and devote in development work in oil operational area. The AAMSU also demanded unconditional release of all arrested AAMSU members.
“If situation turns violent due to indifferent attitude of Shivani Group and District Authority, the government should take onus of the situation”, the AAMSU cautioned.
