SIVASAGAR, Aug 17: Demanding arrest and punishment of Madhurjya Dutta, a youth Congress member for his attempt to kill AASU activists while staging a road blockade yesterday, hundreds of Sivasagar Regional AASU activists and school students staged a one-hour NH-37 blockade at Gaurisagar on Friday.
It needs mentioning that eight AASU activists were injured, when two vehicles (Mahindra Scorpio and Tata Indigo) hit a group of AASU demonstrators at Kawoimari in Sivasagar district on Thursday. The AASU activists were holding a demonstration at Kawoimari to demand repair and maintenance of the Gaurisagar-Dikhowmukh road.
The injured had been shifted to the Sivasagar Civil Hospital. Immediately after the incident, the students’ body filed an FIR at the Gaurisagar police station and a case had been registered (No. 77/12) under sections 307 and 325 of the IPC.
The police later arrested Jitu Dutta, owner of the Mahindra Scorpio, which was also seized. In the FIR, the AASU also named Madhurjya Dutta as owner of the Tata Indigo vehicle and had set a deadline of 24-hours for the police to arrest him with the threat to initiate a series of protests. As the police had failed to arrest the accused Madhurjya Dutta within the deadline, the AASU unit of the Sivasagar Regional, led by its president Biswajyoti Bhuyan, staged the road blockade on NH-37 at Gaurisagar. |
