Rise in bike lifting causes concern in Kokrajhar

From our Correspondent

KOKRAJHAR, Feb 2: The cases of bike lifting in Kokrajhar town has become a matter of concern for all as it is becoming a regular phenomenon. One may get surprised to hear lifting of a number of bikes in a single night in an organized form even from the well built house having strong boundary walls and iron gate with lock.

Meanwhile, Kokrajhar police have arrested five persons from different parts of Kokrajhar within 3–4 days. The arrested bike lifters are identified as Raju Devnath (25) of Salakati, Pwilao Basumatary (20), Prasad Narzary (20), Thulsi Kr Khaklary (21) and a minor (name withheld). The villages of the four thieves are not disclosed.

The OC of Kokrajhar Police Station S Deka said the bike lifters have been arrested within 3–4 days based on the specific information. He said all the arrested thieves are students of different educational institutions and search operation is going on to nab the thieves and more arrest is iminent after the arrest of the five lifters.

Unofficial reports revealed that the lifting of bike could have crossed 40 and there are reports of at least 15 bikes stolen from different places in Kokrajhar town last week but the police administration fails to detect and nab the lifters. People of Kokrajhar have come to know that the bike lifters are well organized and there could be a big gang who could have even fire arms.

A reputed businessman of Kokrajhar told The Sentinel that the bike lifters took away his bike last week and at the same time they also took away the bike of his neighbour by breaking the iron gate. He also said his PSO was on leave that night and the bike lifters in group tried to steal another bike of his son. It is notable fact that the bike lifters mainly eyed on the capitalists and rich families. It is also not known where these stolen bikes have been supplied. The Pulsar is the main target of bike lifters. People of Kokrajhar keep their bikes inside the rooms since the abnormal increase of lifting cases. A Council Head of the Department (CHD) of a particular department of BTC (Name withheld) got the same experience. He said they did not know how the lock of iron gate was broken and how they could enter into the complex. He also said the family member who is in rent even saw small arms in their hands and fearing of being shot, he kept mum.
