‘Stop all mega dam projects’

From our Correspondent

JORHAT, Feb 8: “The Central Government must stop the mega dam projects constructed in the hills of Arunachal Pradesh till the final feasibility report is filed. The government should think about the adverse impact of the dam projects in the right time. After erecting these mega dam projects in the hills the future of the lower parts residing people will jeopardize,” said All Assam Students’ Union advisor Dr Sammujal Kumar Bhattacharya, participating as the chief guest at a meeting held at Jengraimukh in Majuli today. The meeting was organized by Takam Mising Porin Kaubang (TMPK), Mising Mimag Kaubang (MMK) and Mising Mimag Porin Kaubang and thousands of people of the island participated the meeting.

The meeting has opposed the construction of mega dam projects to be build up in the hills of Arunachal Pradesh on the river Debang. The organizations also protests the construction of Lower Suwansiri Hydro Electric Project of Dhemaji district and such other proposed mega hydroelectric projects to be constructed in Northeast region of the country.

The organizations said that, the Debang Hydro Electric Mega Project, which would be 500 metre deep and 43 kilometre long is a threat for Assam and Assamese people. This project would be the biggest dam project in Asia and from which around 3,000 MW power to be generated. The organizations also alleged that, the Central Government has made a commitment with Arunachal Government that, after completion of the said project the government will provide 12 per cent power for Arunachal Pradesh in free of cost, but the existing government has failed to remember about the Assam’s people living in the lower part of the river. Pointing out a report of survey in this regard they said that, the said region of Arunachal Pradesh is basically an earthquake prone area and if the dam would be smashed the flowing water will cover the Sadia area within five minutes and Dibrugarh town in 38 minutes. They further stated that, the Debang river which is one of the biggest tributary of Brahmaputra carrying 20 per cent water of the main river will be a major threat for Assam after holding this water.

Therefore, the organization has been organizing a number of protest meet in this regard. Earlier, the Mising organizations had held meetings in Gogamukh and Dhemaji respectively.
