JORHAT, July 30: There are allegations that thousands of suspected Bangladeshi nationals have been taking shelter in the Bhogdoi Puja Dubi area since long back. There are also allegations that a number of political leaders of the town are behind giving shelter to the people of suspected nationalities in rented houses for their electoral gains. The surprising fact is that although a large number of huts have been given on rent in the area, there are no records of these huts with the district and police administrations.
Illegal activities like car lifting, illegal marketing of LPG, prostitution, running liquor dens etc are being run from the area that is considered as the safe haven of smugglers.
A section of political brokers, including some elected representatives, have been allegedly involved in providing ration cards to the people of suspected nationalities under the very nose of Jorhat district and police administrations. Although the former Jorhat SP had issued an order to the house owners to submit the reports of rented houses and tenants to the police, the order has not been implemented on the ground as yet. What prevents the police administration to enforce the notice issued by the former SP? Only an inquiry can unearth the forces that have been working from behind the screen.
