MANGALDAI, June 28: Incessant rainfall has led to worsening of the flood situation in Darrang district triggering fresh inundation.
The swollen Brahmaputra river breached more than five dykes and embankments affecting 82 villages and rendering at least 54,300 villagers homeless.
The surging water of Saktola and Nonoi rivers have been flowing above the danger mark. The district administration, meanwhile, evacuated 85 families under Sipajhar revenue circle while the army has been pressed into service for rescue of six marooned families in Dhoikapara under Sipajhar revenue circle area.
The district administration has constructed 10 relief camps to shelter 4059 flood affected families.
On the other hand, as per the instruction given by the Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi, who is on his visit to US, Planning and Development Minsiter Tanka Bahadur Rai today visited the flood affected villages of the district and took stock of the flood situation.
He also convened an emergency meeting of all the officials of the departmental heads and the district administration and asked them to leave no stone unturned in undertaking relief and rescue operation.
Minister of State for fisheries, Janasanyog Basanta Das also visited the flood affected areas of the district accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Sohrab Ali. |
