MANGALDAI, July 3: Two cops have been suspended for open firing on the innocent people of Duliapara-Sekentola village under Dalgaon Police station in Darrang.
The suspended cops have been identified as Tabibur Rahman, Sub Inspector of Daipam Police Out post and constable Jagadish Bhuyan of Daipam Police Out post.
Police sources said, a team of police led by Sub Inspector Tabibur Rahman went to the village inorder to arrest the two accused persons namely Ismail Ali and Zahir Ali on Sunday night. When the police apprehended Zahir, a section of villagers mainly his relatives tried to release him from the police custody. They pelted stones on the police team in which two constables sustained injuries and taking the chance of the ongoing scuffling, the agitated mob managed to take the accused person out of the police van. Finding no alternative, the police team opened fire in order to disperse the agitated mob in which four villagers including two women sustained bullet injuries.
In the scuffle one constable also sustained injuries. Two injured villagers have been shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospitals while the injured constable was shifted to Mangaldai Civil Hospital.
Darrang Deputy Commissioner Sohrab Ali, Superintendent of Police Vivek Raj Singh and local legislator-cum-parliamentary Secretary Illias Ali rushed to the spot immediately. As per the demand of the agitated villagers, Superintendent of Police Vivek Raj Singh made an announcement before the public to place both the cop under suspension. However, the agitated people of the locality demanded for the arrest of both the erring cops.
Earlier, on Sunday evening the district police administration suspended the Sub Inspector of Mangaldai Police Station Manoj Kumar Barua for demanding money from a harijan person for registering a case. |
