Youth held on extortion charge

TANGLA, Sept 13:  A youth was apprehended after he allegedly demanded extortion money from a Udalguri Civil Hospital physician, Dr. Bhagirath Dey on Wednesday. The physician, a resident of Nislamari village under Orang PS of Udalguri, was demanded money by Dipankar Borah (20), a resident of 1 No. Saikia Chuburi of Orang and his accomplice Gusafang Basumatari in the name of a banned militant outfit.
 With threats of kidnapping his son and attacking him, the physician agreed to pay a sum of Rs. 2,20,000 to the duo. The victim was threatened of dire consequences if he disclosed the matter to anyone. The victim, however, told some conscious people about it and the youth was interrogated and man-handled by the public after he confessed to the crime.
 Following an FIR by the physician, the youth was apprehended by Orang Police and  search for his accomplice is on. Sources said that the youths were involved in serving extortion demands to school teachers and traders in the name of the banned militant outfit NDFB which has active presence in Udalguri district.
