Deepor Beel Festival underway

From our Correspondent
AZARA, Feb 9: The three-day Deepor Beel Festival began on Friday near Guwahati on Friday. While the cultural procession was flagged off by singer Babu, the flag of the festival was hoisted by organizing committee president and local MLA RN Kalita and the main gate was opened by former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.
While State Textile and Sericulture Minister Ranjit Dutta inaugurated the food festival and the textile exhibition, State Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma released the souvenir. There was a cultural programme in the evening. The aim and objective of holding the festival is to project Deepor Beel as a tourist spot. On Saturday there will be a seminar on ‘Bio-diversity and Tourism Prospects of Deepor Beel’. It will be opened by KK Handique Open University Vice Chancellor Hitesh Deka.   Despite the standing order of not making any high-pitch sound in the area so as not to scare migratory birds away from the bird sanctuary, on the very first day of the festival high-pitched sounds were heard, against the very purpose of the festival.
