Guwahati, Oct 12: Under attack from various quarters for alleged stone-pelting at the Team Australia bus on Tuesday night, police on Thursday formally arrested two persons in connection with the incident.
Rajesh Hajowary (25) and Pabitra Khatriya (18), who were picked up from Sawkuchi area early on Wednesday, were arrested and produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Thursday. Though the police prayed for 3-day custody, the court sent the duo in 14-day judicial remand.
Police sources said Rajesh and Pabitra were found moving around suspiciously in the area post the stone-throwing incident and were detained around 2.30 am on Wednesday.
The bus carrying Australian cricketers from Barsapara cricket stadium after their T-20 match against India was allegedly pelted with a stone, which shattered a glass window, at around 11.30 pm. Though none was injured, the incident caused an uproar among cricket fans, especially in the city who feared that future international matches here could get affected.
Talking to The Sentinel, Guwahati Police Commissioner Hiren Nath said the two have been arrested as the police suspect their involvement in the case. He also said “all angles” were being probed into.
However, there are allegations that the two persons arrested were not involved in the incident and were working as a driver and handyman of a truck. The duo was allegedly walking towards the Inter-State Bus Terminus after parking the truck at its owner’s house when they were picked up at around 2.30 am.
Meanwhile, Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner M Angamuthu told reporters here on Thursday that the district administration was studying if there was any lapse at any level during the T-20 cricket match between India and Australia on Tuesday evening, including disaster management.
