Draft NRC: SC for resolving OI & panchayat issues first

From a Correspondent
New Delhi, Nov 10: The Supreme Court on Friday observed that ‘Original Inhabitants’ status and panchayat document issues should be resolved before publishing the draft NRC in Assam.
A 2-member bench of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Navin Sinha while taking up the matter said that “both the issues are related to NRC exercise in the State.”
The apex court has given November 22 as the next date of hearing on the case.
“We welcome the observation of the Supreme Court. At the same time, we want that genuine Indians should not be excluded from NRC whereas foreign nationals should not get their names included in it,” Assam State Jamiat Ulema secretary Maulana Fazlul Karim.
The apex court was hearing the petition filled by Congress MLAs from Assam over Original Inhabitants issue.
NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela and Registrar General of India Sailesh were present during the hearing.
