HC rejects Rakesh Paul's bail plea

By Our Staff Reporter
Guwahati, Nov 14: In a major setback to beleaguered former Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) Chairman Rakesh Paul, the Gauhati High Court on Tuesday rejected his bail application. Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan ruled: “Bearing in mind the nature of serious accusation against the Head of a Institution like APSC which is required to be properly investigated into by the investigation agency and to protect the interest of the society at large, without forming any opinion on the merit of the case, this Court is of the opinion that the accused petitioner cannot be released on bail at this stage, hence rejected.”The court also asked the police to file supplementary charge-sheet on the case within three months. It, however, gave the police the leeway to take additional time, if required, “for the better interest of the investigation” by filing prayer before the concerned court seeking more time for “justified reasons”. The court further ruled that Paul can renew the bail prayer before the trial court after filing of the supplementary charge-sheet.
