AASCSU protests against illegal molasses business in Golaghat

 From a Correspondent
GOLAGHAT (Dhekial), Oct 11:  The activists of All Assam Scheduled Caste Students’ Union (AASCSU) Golaghat district committee staged a two hour sit-in near the Deputy Commissioner’s office  on Wednesday against illegal business of molasses in various places of Golaghat district.
The activists shouted various slogans against the department concerned as well as district administration for failing to stop illegal business of molasses in the district. The AASCSU also alleged that a section of senior officers of the district administration had an unholy nexus with the businessmen who sell molasses for making local-made liquor (sulai) in the rural areas.
The president and secretary of the organization, Madhurjya Das and Pranab Protim Das respectively, said that on July 16, local people with the help of AASCSU caught two businessmen of Merapani area for illegally  storing molasses in godowns in Merapani area of Golaghat district.  Later, the godowns of the two businessmen, Anil Gupta and Pradip Gupta were sealed in presence of the magistrate of Merapani, Subhan Das. But interestingly, the Golaghat district administration gave permission to reopen the godowns.
The general secretary of  AASCSU central committee, Paramanda Das said that they had several times met the Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat to resolve the problem of illegal molasses business in the district. Despite assurance to resolve the issue, the Deputy Commissioner issued several cattle feed licenses which provoked businessmen to run illegal molasses business for preparing local liquor, the AASCSU alleged. Notably, in Merapani area there were no cattle firms for using a large quantity of molasses. The AASCSU demanded to stop the illegal molasses business in Golaghat district immediately.
