JORHAT, Nov 13: “Do not panic over the greater Nagalim issue, it is all a rumour. The process is on and as such there is no plan to hand over land to Nagaland,” said Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi during media interaction at the Circuit House conference hall in Jorhat on Sunday. The Governor said that as per indication by the Prime Minister, the country was the fastest growing economy in the world based on agriculture. So by 2022, India will become self-sufficient and no stone will be left unturned for agricultural growth in the country as well as Assam.
“We have the Assam Agricultural University in Jorhat which is the role model for the State as several projects are in the pipeline for doubling the farmers’ income. We have to double the income of farmers not only by increasing the production but also by bringing the uncultivated land under cultivation first. Instead of cultivating one crop, farmers should cultivate more than one crop which will be made compulsory following which farmers’ income will be supplemented by other means like poultry, piggery, cattle rearing, dairy, fishery, mushroom cultivation and horticulture,” said the Governor.
Moreover, he said the Government of India had emphasized finalizing the price of the farmers’ products through which farmers will be able to sell their products to APMC as the farmers are looted by brokers and middlemen. “An Act has been passed by the Parliament and I hope that the Assam Government will soon pass also as it will bring a sea change in this State where 85 per cent of the people depend directly or indirectly on agriculture,” he added.
