Goalpara, Nov 13: In continuation of their demand for a Garo Autonomous District Council, several Garo organizations have called for a 12-hours chakka bandh on November 16 in Goalpara and Kamrup districts. The chakka bandh from 5am to 5 pm has been called against the indifferent attitude of the State Government towards the development of the Garo people and for not responding to the deadline of November 15 these organisations had given earlier.
The Garo National Council, Garo National Union, Garo Women Council, Achik Socialist Youth Federation of India and other organizations stated in a press release that they decided in a meeting held at Nishangram under Dudhnoi police station on October 28 to stage agitation and take different other similar programmes if their demands were not met before November 15.
Meanwhile, Thengsil Sangma, president of Garo National Council, said “Today is November 13 and till date we have received no sign of response from the government. So, we have decided to go for the bandh.” The proposed bandh is likely to disrupt both NH-37 and NH-51, besides normal life in Goalpara and Kamrup rural districts.
