From our Staff Correspondent
Dibrugarh, Jan 3: Jokai Gaon Panchayat, that comes under Barbaruah Development Block, was declared an open defecation-free panchayat on Tuesday. With this, it became the 14th panchayat in the district to achieve the feat that runs central to the much talked about Swachh Bharat Mission of the government.
The announcement was made by the former president of Axam Xahitya Xabha as well as District Endorser of Swachh Bharat Mission, Dibrugarh district, Dr. Nagen Saikia and Deputy Commissioner, Laya Maduri, at a public meeting organized by the District Drinking Water and Sanitation Committee at Jokai Higher Secondary School.
Speaking to the gathering, Saikia reiterated the adage, ‘Cleanliness is Godliness’, and urged every member of the society to work towards keeping their society and surroundings clean. The noted litterateur, Saikia, added that in order to turn Jokai Botanical Forest into a major tourist attraction of Assam, the locals would have to endeavour to keep the forest clean and hygienic. Madduri, in her speech, underscored the role of the students and the teachers in spreading the message of cleanliness among public, and thus, egged on the students of Jokai Higher Secondary School to continue working as messengers of cleanliness for the masses.
The Dibrugarh District Drinking Water and Sanitation Committee had long been trying to have Dibrugarh recognized as an open defecation-free district under Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin). As a result of its efforts, 14 gaon panchayats, out of a total of 93 in the district, have earned the tag so far.
