Lack of officers hampers labour department in Sivasagar

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
SIVASAGAR, Oct 11: The government’s claims of preventing child labour have fallen flat in Sivasagar. The labour department has failed to tackle the menace in Sivasagar owing to acute shortage of officers in the office of the Assistant Labour Commissioner. At a time when the Central and State governments have prohibited engagement of child workers in any nature of work, particularly that of hazardous nature such as hotel, restaurant, dhaba, garage and grocery shop, the drive has become a headache for the department due to shortage of officers.
Public service in the office of the Assistant Labour Commissioner in Sivasagar has allegedly been hit over a period of time reportedly due to the shortage of officers. According to official sources, the office has been running without the Assistant Labour Commissioner since last one year or more. Similarly, the post of one Labour Officer is also lying vacant.
Since the Labour Commissioner of Jorhat has been given the additional charge of Sivasagar, it has been alleged that the Commissioner comes to Sivasagar office for only a day in a week. On the other hand, against two sanctioned posts of labour inspector, the district labour department has only one labour inspector.  The acute shortage of officers has hit the smooth functioning of the office. People have therefore, urged the State Labour Minister to take immediate action to fill up these vacant posts.
